Why study Law at Monash?
“The law should not be seen as narrow-minded, conservative and tedious, but as broad, critical and intellectually stimulating. At Monash Law we are committed to providing the highest standard of legal education and training to produce quality graduates who hold a good grounding in legal, social and ethical issues.”
Professor Arie Freiberg, Dean of Law
The Monash Law advantage
Monash Law graduates reflect the fundamental nature of the law school which is to influence and inspire. We teach our students how to think differently, to reason, to seek out knowledge and to apply what they have learned irrespective of the problem. By providing opportunities such as overseas study, professional internships, practical training and international competitions we enrich the study experience and contribute to both the personal and professional development of our students. This combination of experiences leads to the development of confident, articulate individuals with transferable skills and knowledge.
A dynamic degree with endless possibilities
Law is increasingly seen as one of the most valuable generalist degrees, providing a solid foundation for a range of careers. In order to enhance legal studies and professional outcomes we offer a range of double degrees which combine law with arts, commerce, engineering, information technology, science, and medicine. Monash Law currently has over 2300 students studying for a Bachelor of Laws, with around half of those pursuing a double degree.
Invaluable practical training with real clients
In the first program of its kind in Australia developed over 30 years ago, as a student at Monash Law you will have the opportunity to obtain practical legal training during your law degree through our two community legal centres. You will work with real clients under expert supervision and be exposed to an array of genuine cases. In addition to learning important skills relating to the practice of law, our students also provide a vital service to the community by assisting those who would otherwise be unable to access legal advice.
Overseas opportunities
At Monash Law we encourage you to develop personally and professionally through a variety of international programs. Our Castan Centre for Human Rights works closely with Reprieve Australia to recruit student volunteers to provide legal representation to those facing the death penalty in the USA. Alternatively, you can join top Monash students who have completed internships at the World Bank in Washington DC and the United Nations in Geneva. Our centre near Florence in Italy gives you the opportunity to study a semester overseas and through our exchange programs and links with the best universities worldwide, you will be exposed to a variety of extra curricular experiences, teaching styles and legal systems.
The Monash Law community
The community feel at our Law School, located on the main Monash campus at Clayton provides a terrific environment to study, which includes one of the most extensive law libraries in Australia and a real life moot court for practising trial work.
Leading academic staff
Our expert teaching staff bring a mix of talent, experience and specialist knowledge to our Law School. Many have worked in countries around the globe and provide leadership and strength in diverse areas from criminal law and human rights to commercial and international law. We also draw on the knowledge of external consultants, including senior members of the judiciary and the profession, as well as international guest lecturers to ensure our programs remain relevant in the changing environment.
Active student body
Monash Law has a lively student body, incorporating the prestigious Law Students’ Society and the Monash International Law Students’ Association. These groups provide facilities, advice and support on curriculum, study and careers and host a variety of social functions. At Monash Law you can also get involved in mooting (mock trial) competitions and join the many past students who have achieved great things competing against the best teams all over the world.
