Ten Steps to EnrolmentStep four: choose your unitsWhich units do you want to study? You can find out what units are offered each year by accessing the unit information sections of the undergraduate University Handbooks. Each unit code is made up of three letters and four numbers: eg LAW1101 is Introduction to legal reasoning. You should familiarise yourself with the detailed outline of your law course. You should also refer to the units available in later years and check on any corequisites (units which must be taken with your chosen units) and prerequisites (units which need to be completed prior to undertaking other units in later years of the course) set out in the unit entries in the handbook. Most disciplines require certain prerequisites for progression to the next semester or year level. You are also encouraged to approach the Student & Academic Services office or academic staff for advice. It is stressed that it is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the units chosen satisfy course requirements and degree regulations. The electronic versions of the Undergraduate Handbook 2008 and faculty regulations will be updated as necessary to reflect any amendments. You can view the 2008 Timetable (see Step nine) to check the suitability of the day/s and time/s your chosen units will be taught. Why do some units require ‘authorisation'?A small number of Law units require authorisation because place numbers are limited. WES enrolment cannot be used for these units. Many research units require consultation with an academic member of the faculty before enrolment can be processed. To enrol in a unit that requires authorisation you must complete an Enrolment Amendment form. Students with credit for previous tertiary studies or enhancement studies If you have applied on the basis of previous tertiary studies or you completed Enhancement Studies during Year 12, it is possible that you will be entitled to receive credit for some of these units. If you wish to apply for credit, you need to complete and return the Credit Application form with certified copies of the relevant transcripts to the Faculty of Law Student Services office (Building 12, Monash University, Clayton 3800) as soon as possible. There is an opportunity for you to discuss your credit application with a student advisor at the Course Advice Sessions scheduled on January 23rd and 24th in the Basement of the Law Building
Although admission into later year units will depend on the level of credit granted, you should refer to the University Handbook for possible selection of later year units and their details. Do you want to study full-time or part-time?The normal full-time load for most courses is 24 points per semester (0.500 Equivalent Full-time Student Load or EFTSL), or 48 points for the whole year (1 EFTSL). Most undergraduate units are worth 6 points (0.125 EFTSL. In most courses part-time study is allowed without any special permission; accordingly you can choose to enrol in one, two, three or four units in each semester – it is up to you. If you decide to study on a part-time basis you must remember that you will not be eligible for certain types of Centrelink payments. To be eligible for payments you must undertake a minimum of 18 points (0.375 EFTSL) or more during each semester. You should also keep in mind that you must complete degrees within specific timeframes: i.e. a single undergraduate degree within 8 years, irrespective of any approved time off you may take during the course of your studies (the standard maximum completion time for double degrees is 10 years). International Students - Important In accordance with the ESOS Act 2000, International students MUST be enrolled in a minimum of 24 points of units in each semester. If you do not enrol in 24 credit points in both semester one and semester two you may be in breach of your student visa requirements and may be reported to DIMA. If you are considering enrolling in less than 24 credit points in a semester then you must first submit an Application to Underload form to Student Services for consideration. |
