Entry into Law at Monash

Students at other universities in Australia, or those already with a degree, may be eligible to apply to study Law at Monash. You can enter a single or double degree with Law and may be eligible to receive credit for previous study (although you must check with the relevant faculty at Monash to ensure you meet their entry requirements). You may also be able to complete your double degree in the minimum time for that degree.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for an external transfer into law at Monash, students must have:

• Completed the equivalent of one year or more of a recognised tertiary degree and
• Achieved a distinction average or better (70%+) across all university units for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), or
• Achieved a credit average or better (60%+) across all university units for an international full-fee place.

Note: The above averages are the minimum entry criteria to be eligible for admission.  Entry to law courses via external transfer is a competitive process and the actual average required depends on the number and standard of applications received each year.

How to apply

Semester 1 entry (local students)

Australian and New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents and holders of Australian permanent humanitarian visas must apply through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC).

You can apply online via the VTAC website or obtain a copy of the application form contained in the VTAC Guide to Tertiary Courses (available in July).

Semester 1, 2010 applications: Applications must be lodged with VTAC by the advertised closing date in September (refer to the VTAC Guide) for timely application. [Late (mid-November) and very late (mid-December) applications incur additional application processing fees.] VTAC acts as a receiving centre for all applications, and offers places at the direction of the participating institutions, but selection and enrolment is carried out separately by each institution.

Semester 1 entry (international students)

International students must apply directly through Monash International Student Admissions

International students will be informed by Monash International Student Admissions about the status of their application.

Pending results: It is your responsibility to notify the Faculty of Law (or Monash International Student Admissions if applicable) of your results as soon as they are available.

Double degrees: For those who want to continue with a double degree, but wish to change the non-law degree (eg. change from BA to BCom/LLB), it is your responsibility to ensure you have met the prerequisites for the non-law component of the degree and provide confirmatory evidence in the form of certified copies of academic transcripts. (Information about prerequisites for courses can be obtained from the current VTAC Guide.
