Course description

This double-degree program allows students to complete the requirements for the individual Bachelor of Business Systems and Bachelor of Laws programs in a minimum of five years of study.

The business systems degree will allow students to develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes in the broad areas of information technology, business and communication while developing a thorough understanding of legal principles and practice.

The aim of the Business Systems/Law combined offering is to produce professionals who have been trained in the use of computers, information systems and the law, for eventual roles in management and/or professional legal practice, specialising in areas such as: intellectual property, electronic law, privacy and the like.

Course Structure

The business systems component requires that students complete 96 credit points of study, including 13 compulsory units and three elective units. Students may graduate with the Bachelor of Business Systems degree after three years of study, provided they have completed a minimum of 144 credit points of study including the 96 credit points of business systems units.

The law component requires that students complete 156 credit points of study including 16 compulsory and a further 12 elective law units.

To meet the law requirement, students must complete 156 points of law units, including the compulsory units listed in the example program.

To meet the Bachelor of Business Systems component of the combined degree, students must complete 96 points of Business Systems units consisting of the compulsory (core) units listed below and one Business Systems elective.

NB: Students cannot graduate from the Bachelor of Business Systems until they have satisfied the Business Systems core units and completed units to the value of 144 points. The units completed must include Introduction to legal reasoning (LAW1101), Law in society (1102), Criminal law and procedure A (LAW3301), Criminal law B (LAW3302), Contract A (LAW2101), Contract B (LAW2102), Property A (LAW3401), Property B (LAW3402), Skills, ethics and research A (LAW1003) and Skills, ethics and research B (LAW2003).

Students who wish to practice law in Victoria must complete the following units as part of their law electives (*):

  • YEAR 4 – Corporations law (LAW4171), Equity (LAW4169) and Trusts (LAW4170).
  • YEAR 5 - Civil procedure (LAW5104), Evidence (LAW5159) and Lawyers, ethics & society (LAW5125)

Unless otherwise specified, all units are equal to 6 credit points.
