Lecturer Professional ProfileTania Penovic is a Lecturer and Associate of the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law. Tania joined the Faculty of Law in 2003 after several years of legal practice and active involvement in the community legal sector. She is admitted to practice in Australia and in England and Wales and has provided legal representation to asylum seekers in Australia and England. Tania has a Master of Studies in International Human Rights Law from the University of Oxford and has been involved in professional human rights training programs, the most recent of which involved training Victorian judges and magistrates on the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (Vic). Tania has been involved in a number of enquiries into law reform. She has made submissions to the Victorian Law Reforms Commission on the civil justice system and the law of abortion. She has also made submissions to government and was the co-author of the Castan Centre submission to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Legislation Committee on the provisions of the Migration Amendment (Designated Unauthorised Arrivals) Bill 2006. The submission resulted in an invitation to give evidence to the committee. Evidence given by Tania is quoted in the committee’s report of 13 June 2006. Tania’s research interests include the human rights of asylum seekers and indigenous peoples, the human rights obligations of corporations and the intersection between human rights and the common law, particularly the law of tort as a source of human rights.
