Professional Profile

Richard joined the Faculty of Law as a lecturer in February 2011. His main research interests are in international law, development and legal theory - with a focus on the concept of sovereignty. His theoretical work draws in particular on critical and post-structural theory.

He has a BA/LLB(Hons) from the University of Melbourne and a PhD from the University of London (Birkbeck College). His doctoral thesis, entitled 'Position and Relation: The Interaction of Sovereign Claims', examined the concept of sovereignty through an analysis of the tension between the World Trade Organisation, the Indian state and local communities in India over patent law and traditional knowledge.

Richard was admitted to practise in 2003 and prior to commencing his PhD practised as a solicitor in the intellectual property group of a leading Australian law firm.

He has taught at Reading University, Birkbeck College, King's College London and University College London.
