Professional Profile

After graduating in Arts/Law from Monash University, Dr O’Connor completed articles and practised for eight years as a legal practitioner with the Australian Legal Aid Office and Legal Aid Commission (Vic) in family law, criminal law and administrative law. After completing an MBA in 1990, she joined the Faculty of Law in 1991 as a senior tutor. Following the births of her two children in 1991 and 1992, she completed an LLM by major thesis in 1995, and was appointed a Senior Lecturer in 2001. In 2000-01 she developed a new postgraduate course in tribunal procedures. In 2003 she completed a PhD thesis entitled ‘Security of Property Rights and Land Title Registration Systems’.

Her teaching areas include Property, Administrative Law, Native Title and Land Rights, Legal Process, Administrative Justice Issues in Tribunal Adjudication and Decision Making for Tribunal Members. She is co-author of a major Australian case/textbook on Property Law and has authored numerous journal articles and book chapters, principally in the areas of land title registration and the interaction of property and environmental governance. 

In 2009 Dr O'Connor was appointed as a Commissioner of the Victorian Law Reform Commission in charge of a reference on reform of the law of easements and covenants and the Property Law Act 1958.  In 2010 she will be on leave from Monash University and working part time with the Commisssion.
