Senior Lecturer Professional ProfileDr Michael King served as a magistrate and practised as a lawyer for Legal Aid WA, Aboriginal Legal Service (WA) and in private practice. He was the first solicitor in charge of a country office of Legal Aid WA, and served as counsel in charge of the ALS (WA) unit that represented Aboriginal families before the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. He is an internationally recognised expert in therapeutic jurisprudence. He introduced three therapeutic jurisprudence based projects when a magistrate and served as Perth Drug Court Magistrate. His articles on diverse topics including therapeutic jurisprudence, judging, legal practice, criminology, natural law and health have appeared in peer reviewed journals in Australia, Europe and the United States. He is researching and writing on the different modalities of non-adversarial or comprehensive approaches to justice – including therapeutic jurisprudence and restorative justice – and their application to courts, the community and legal practice.
