Ms Kathryn JamesProfile | Research | Curriculum Vitae
Assistant Lecturer Professional ProfileKathryn teaches and researches in the areas of administrative law and taxation law and policy. Kathryn was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria in 2005. Her professional background encompasses experience working with the Commonwealth government and the Victorian parliament. Kathryn graduated from Monash University in 2003 with a BA and LLB with first class honours and was awarded the Sir John Monash Award for Academic Excellence. Kathryn is undertaking a PhD that examines global consumption tax reform trends to explain how political and economic factors influence tax reform processes and legislative outcomes. Specifically the thesis provides an historical and comparative account of the prolonged and controversial attempts to reform national consumption taxation, specifically value-added taxes, in Australia, Canada, Japan and the United States. In January 2007, Kathryn was awarded the Graham Hill International Fiscal Association Research Prize for the outstanding quality of this doctoral research. Kathryn has been published in the British Tax Review and has presented papers on tax reform both in Australia and internationally including at Cambridge University, UCLA and Humboldt University. Kathryn is an active volunteer with a strong commitment to social justice. She has a longstanding involvement with Springvale Monash Legal Service.
