Professional Profile

Dr Heilbronn's professional career has been diverse geographically and academically, ranging from general law practice in the far north of Australia to experience in international organizations, notably IATA in Geneva and law academic roles especially in Hong Kong and Melbourne, having begun his academic career at Monash in the late 1970's.

Though primarily engaged in private consultancy in recent years, for over three decades he has been involved in the specialist areas of aviation law and litigation law, particularly criminal procedure and has acquired an international reputation in these areas having addressed many conferences and published widely with particular emphasis on the laws of Australia and Hong Kong.

One of his early works was a seminal text on travel and tourism law in Australia and New Zealand. He authored the Civil Aviation volume in Halsbury's Laws of Hong Kong and most of the Aviation titles in the Laws of Australia, as well as much used text books on criminal procedure in Hong Kong and the legal sytem in Australia.

During his stints as a law academic and as Associate Dean of Law in Hong Kong, Dr Heilbronn has taken a particular interest in research development and computerization and from its early developmental days in the 1990's, was an integral member of a small research team which developed a case law database which was eventually integrated with the Hong Kong Government's legislation and case law service. He has also received various grants.

Otherwise, he takes a keen interest in sport, especially rugby.
