Associate Professor Professional ProfileGideon Boas joined the staff at Monash University Law School as a Senior Lecturer in July 2007. He was, until October 2006, a Senior Legal Officer at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, where he was the senior legal advisor to the Trial Chamber on the Milošević case and responsible for the conduct of a number of other complex criminal trials, as well as a member of the ICTY Rules Committee. Dr Boas was admitted to practice in 1994 and practiced in areas of complex litigation for several years in Sydney. He has also worked for the Australian Red Cross and consulted on projects for the international Committee of the Red Cross and International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. He has extensive experience as a consultant in international and criminal law (including as a member of the defence team for Radoan Karadzic and consultant on a gap study project for lessons learned by the International Criminal Court for the UK Government ), human rights (including consulting for the United Nations Development Fund and delivering training to judges and lawyers on the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities) and sustainability. He writes opinion articles and provides television and radio interviews on matters relating to international and criminal law and politics. His areas of major interest are international criminal law, international humanitarian law, public international law and complex litigation.
