Professional Profile

Professor Bernadette McSherry was awarded an Australian Research Council Federation Fellowship in 2007 for her project on Rethinking Mental Health Laws.  She had previously been appointed to the Louis Waller Chair of Law in 2005. She is a Legal Member of the Mental Health Review Board of Victoria and the Psychosurgery Review Board of Victoria. She researches in the areas of Criminal Law and Mental Health Law. She is the co-author of two major texts on Criminal Law and has published widely in refereed journals. She is on the editorial Boards of the following journals:

  • International Journal of Forensic Mental Health
  • Journal of Commonwealth Criminal Law
  • Monash Bioethics Review
  • Psychiatry, Psychology and Law
  • Psychology, Public Policy and Law

and is the co-editor of the Legal Issues Column for the Journal of Law and Medicine.

In 1999, she received a Monash University Vice-Chancellor's Award for Distinguished Teaching and in 2010, she was awarded the Vice-Chancellor's Special Commendation for Postgraduate Supervision.

In 2010, she was also awarded fellowship in the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and in the Australian Academy of Law.
