Associate Professor Anne-Maree FarrellProfile | Research | Curriculum Vitae
Associate Professor Professional ProfileDr Anne-Maree Farrell is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law. She previously held academic positions at the University of Manchester and Lancaster University in the UK. Her research expertise lies generally in health law and policy, with specific interests in the regulatory governance of human biological materials (blood, organs and stem cells) and health technologies, as well as medical malpractice and patient safety. She has published widely in a range of internationally recognised journals and edited collections. Her books include The Politics of Blood: Ethics Innovation and the Regulation of Risk (Cambridge University Press, 2012, in press); European Law and New Health Technologies (Oxford University Press, 2013, forthcoming, co-edited with M. Flear, T.K. Hervey and T. Murphy); and Organ Shortage: Ethics Law and Pragmatism (Cambridge University Press, 2011, co-edited with D. Price and M. Quigley). Dr Farrell is currently involved in a number of funded research projects: The Wellcome Trust Strategic Programme in The Human Body: Its Scope Limits and Future (governance of biomaterials strand) (2009-2014); and Risk, safety and consent in contemporary blood services in the UK: perspectives from sociology and law (2011-2013) funded by the Economic and Social Research Council in the UK. She has previously been involved in funded research projects covering the following areas: medical negligence, no-fault compensation for medical injury; organ donation and transplantation; European law and new health technologies; and the impact of the criminal law on healthcare ethics and practice. She has been a visiting research fellow at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques (IEP), CERAT, Université Pierre-Mendès-France, Grenoble II, France; the METRO Institute, University of Maastricht, the Netherlands; and the Law Department, European University Institute, Florence, Italy. She was a Visiting Professor at the Institut Droit et Santé (IDS), Université Paris Descartes, France in 2009 and 2010. Dr Farrell is admitted to practice as a solicitor and barrister in Victoria, as well as a solicitor in New South Wales, England and Wales, and Ireland. She has over ten years' experience working in personal injury litigation on behalf of plaintiffs in both Australia and Ireland, as well as undertaking consultancy work in both the United States and Canada.
