Higher Degrees by Research

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

The MPhil is a research degree that can be undertaken in any area of legal research offered by the faculty. This degree is suited to students:

  • seeking to undertake an inter-disciplinary research topic
  • who have previously completed a Masters (by coursework)
  • are looking to complete an alternative degree with developed research skills below the level of PhD.

Structure

The MPhil requires successful completion of a thesis of no more than 50,000 words.

Duration

2 years full-time or 4 years part-time study

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree with Honours with a grade of H1 or H2A in any discipline or a Masters degree by coursework.

Applicants are admitted on the basis of their academic record, proven research capabilities, referee and examiner reports, and published research in English. Admission will also depend on the availability of staff to undertake supervision.

Applications can be made throughout the year. Students intending to apply for a Postgraduate Research Scholarship are requested to contact the Faculty Research Officer in the first instance.

Fees

There is no tuition fee for local students. Local students admitted to this course are funded under the Commonwealth’s Research Training Scheme (RTS). Those students who do not receive an RTS commonwealth funded place at the time of enrolment will usually be given a non-commonwealth funded place, where the course fees are fully waived until an RTS place becomes available.

Tuition fees apply to international students. The current annual fee is A$22,720.

Confirmation of Candidature

Successful MPhil applicants will be admitted to the course on a probationary basis during the first 6 months of full-time candidature and 12 months of part-time candidature.

Confirmation of candidature will take place before the end of the probationary period and requires submission of some written work and an oral presentation before an advisory panel of at least three academic staff members including the supervisor. Guidelines and a confirmation of candidature form are available from the Monash Research Graduate School.

Candidates will be notified by the Monash Research Graduate School when the confirmation of candidature is due to take place. Please see Section 3.7 of the Doctoral and MPhil Handbook on the policy of "Confirmation of Candidature".
