Higher Degrees by Research

Master of Laws (Research)

This research degree is suited to law graduates who wish to develop a high level of legal writing and research skills and can be undertaken in any area of research offered by the faculty.

Structure

A candidate proceeding to the Master of Laws (Research) shall be required to submit a thesis, normally not exceeding 50,000 words in length.  

It is expected that the thesis should

  • embody the results of an investigation in a field of study approved by the faculty and be carried out by the candidate under supervision of a nominated supervisor appointed by the faculty
  • be the original work of the candidate, except where due reference is made in the thesis
  • display a thorough understanding of subject matter and contribute to knowledge and understanding within the field of study concerned.

Duration

The standard duration of the candidature is two years' full-time or four years' part-time. 

The Faculty Board may, at the request of a candidate before the due completion date, grant an extension of candidature for a maximum period of three months in the case of full time, and six months in the case of part-time, candidature.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have qualified in the faculty for the degree of Bachelor of Laws with honours; or hold a legal qualification from the university or another educational institution deemed equivalent or a satisfactory substitute by the faculty board.

Fees

There is no tuition fee for local students. Local students admitted to this course are funded under the Commonwealth’s Research Training Scheme (RTS). Those students who do not receive an RTS commonwealth funded place at the time of enrolment will usually be given a non-commonwealth funded place, where the course fees are fully waived until an RTS place becomes available.

Tuition fees apply to international students.   The current annual fee is A$21,625.

Confirmation of Candidature

Successful LLM (Research) applicants will be admitted to the course on a probationary basis during the first six months of full-time candidature or 12 months of part-time candidature.

Confirmation of candidature will take place before the end of the probationary period and requires submission of some written work and an oral presentation before an advisory panel of at least three academic staff members including the supervisor. The Faculty has adopted the same forms and procedures as apply to the PhD. Guidelines and a confirmation of candidature form are available from the Monash Research Graduate School.

Candidates will be notified by the Faculty Research Office when the confirmation of candidature is due to take place.
