Ms Kate Eastman

Kate Eastman has practised as a barrister in Sydney since 1998. After completing a Master of Laws in International Human Rights Law in London, she returned to Australia to work as a solicitor at Allen Allen & Hemsley from 1991 to 1994, working in the commercial litigation and corporate groups. As part of the firm's pro bono program, Kate acted for asylum seekers detained at the Port Hedland Detention Centre and was seconded to Kingsford Legal Centre. In 1995, she joined the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission as a senior legal officer where she worked on the commission's hearings, intervened in court proceedings involving human rights and advised on a range of discrimination and human rights issues. Since 1995, Kate has been a part-time law lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney teaching human rights and Australian civil liberties law. Kate has been actively involved in a number of human rights and international law organisations. She was a co-founder and president of Australian Lawyers for Human Rights and is the Australian alternate member to the International Human Rights Law and Practice Committee of the International Law Association.
