Professor Ian Freckelton

Ian Freckelton is a Senior Counsel practising full-time from Crockett Chambers in administrative law, criminal law and medico-legal work at both trial and appellate level. Ian is also a professor with Monash Law School and in the schools of Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine and of Forensic Medicine. He recently stepped down as the lawyer member of the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria and has served on nine other tribunals. He is the Vice-President of the International Institute of Forensic Studies, the Australasian Vice-President of the International Academy of Law and Mental Health, a Board member of Bond University’s Centre of Forensic Excellence and is the Victorian President of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law.

He is the Editor of the Journal of Law and Medicine, the Editor-in-Chief of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law and the author of some three dozen books and over 350 articles and chapters of books on medical law, coronial law, mental health law, evidence law, causation, compensation law, criminal law, therapeutic jurisprudence, sentencing, and policing. His OUP book (with David Ranson) on Death Investigation and the Coroner’s Inquest was short-listed as the Australian scholarly book of the year in 2006. In 2008 Thomson is publishing the 4th edition of his book with Hugh Selby, Expert Evidence: Law, Practice, Procedure and Advocacy and in early 2009 it is publishing the 5th edition of Indictable Offences in Victoria, as well as his new book (with Hugh Selby), Appealing to the Future, Michael Kirby and His Legacy.
