This course is only available to previous Monash University’s Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice, Skills and Ethics (PDLP) students.

Course structure

This Master of Laws requires completion of 48 credit point, either by undertaking eight coursework units or a combination of coursework and a minor research thesis:

  • Eight coursework units (at least five in advanced legal practice) or
  • 12,000-15,000 word thesis on advanced legal practice and six coursework units (at least three in advanced legal practice) or
  • 25,000-30,000 word thesis on advanced legal practice and four coursework units (at least one in advanced legal practice).

Previous Monash Univeristy's PDLP students maybe given credit for up to 24 credit points if students achieved the required marks in the relevant units.

These are as follows:

  • A graduate who obtains a result of 70% or more in each of the major units, Civil Litigation Practice, Commercial and Corporate Practiceand Property Law Practice, plus 70% or more in each of the elective units is entitled to credit of 50% or 24 points (four units) of the LLM (Advanced Legal Practice).
  • A graduate who obtains an average of 65-69% across the three major units (Civil Litigation Practice, Commercial and Corporate Practice and Property Law Practice) and in each of the electives is entitled to credit of 25% or 12 points (two units) of the LLM (Advanced Legal Practice)
  • A graduate who obtains a result of 70% or more in two of the three major units above only is entitled to credit of 25% 12 points (two units) of the LLM (Advanced Legal Practice).

Note: The above credit information is only applicable to students who commenced the PDLP from July 2005 onwards. Students who have completed the PDLP before July 2005 should contact the Postgraduate Studies Officer for advice on credit to be granted.
