What is stress?

Many people think that stress is something that happens to us. Stress is however, an interaction between the demands of the environment and the coping skills/abilities of the individual. It doesn’t just happen to us and we can have influence over how we react to our environment.

Five components of stress:

  1. Stressors -demands that we are under
  2. Physical
  3. Cognitive
  4. Emotional
  5. Behaviour

The first step to managing stress is to recognise that some stress is good for us, it motivates, makes us alert etc. If our stress levels get too high then our abilities for things like study can be significantly compromised.
