International applications

The Master of Laws (Juris Doctor) has three intakes per year; January, May and August.

Monash JD Entry Requirements

Application Steps

  1. Submit an online application.
  2. Provide original or original certified supporting documentation.

Supporting Documentation

  • evidence that you meet the English language entry requirements: Overall IELTS of 7.0; with Reading 7.0, Listening 7.0, Writing 7.0 and Speaking 7.0. Paper-based TOEFL 600 (TWE of 5.0); or a Computer-based TOEFL 253 (ER of 5.0) or Internet-based TOEFL Overall: 102 (with Writing 24+, and no other section lower than 20).
  • a detailed current curriculum vitae and,
  • original or original certified copies of your academic transcripts, and evidence of completion, for all tertiary studies undertaken.

If your documentation is in a language other than English, an official certified translation must be provided.  You are not required to submit academic transcripts for courses you have undertaken at Monash University, but should instead provide your Monash student number.

Students who accept their offer will be invited attend the Monash JD Welcome function for all new students. It is usually held one or two weeks before the course commences.

The first two units (LAW7212 Australian legal system and LAW7079 Legal research and problem solving) will be held at the Monash University Clayton Campus. Students granted credit and/or exemptions for these early units will commence their study in the city.

Note: Some candidates may be interviewed. Interviews are held in person at the Monash Law Chambers (or via teleconference if necessary).

*If you receive credit or exemptions for any of the commencing Clayton units, you may need to start City units in the week beginning 4th January 2010.


Credit transfer

If you have completed postgraduate law studies with another institution within the last eight years, you may apply for credit.  The maximum amount of credit that can be granted towards the Monash JD, is eight units.  These may consist of eight core units (the named units in the Course structure ) or seven core units and one elective unit.

Credit will no be given for units completed as part of an undergraduate degree, although students may be exempted from units where appropriate.

When applying for credit or exemptions, an original or certified copy of your academic results and unit syllabus (units synopsis, assessment, number of hours, textbooks used) for the year the unit was studied is required for all studies not completed at Monash University.

You must submit the Credit application form with your supporting documentation.
