2006 Human Writes Essay Topic

In 2006 students have the opportunity to engage in an extremely current and controversial human rights topic.

“We have more to fear from the State than from terrorists”

Students may argue for or against the statement, or can elect to examine both sides of the issue. Essays should convey the student’s viewpoint effectively and concisely and can focus on specific issues within the topic or more broadly across the issue. Here are some topic examples:

  1. The effect of State actions on Civil Liberties (eg freedom of speech) vs the effect of Terrorist actions on Civil Liberties
  2. The effect of State action on lives (eg death penalty) vs the effect of terrorist actions on lives (bombs etc)
  3. The effect of State actions on the mood/happiness of society (culture of fear) vs the affect of terrorist threat on the mood/happiness of society (culture of fear)
  4. Impact on the introduction of national identity cards
  5. Impact on society of anti-terrorism legislation

This same issue will be the centre of argument at the 2006 Great Law Week Debate, where top Monash Law Alumni will argue this hot legal, social and political issue.

The winners of the writing competition will be announced and awards presented at the 2006 Debate to be held on Tuesday, 23 May (winners will be notified of the venue, times and all relevant details about the award ceremony and debate by Monday, 15 May).
