Graduate Entry: Pathways into Law at Monash

The Monash Juris Doctor (JD)

The Monash JD is a graduate entry law degree specifically designed to teach graduate students the knowledge and skills required to practise law. This intensive program can be completed in just two and a half years and offers the flexibility to continue working while you study, as well as a convenient CBD teaching location at the Monash Law Chambers.  The Monash JD's small class sizes and excellent teaching staff provide a high quality, interactive learning environment. JD entry requirements.

Bachelor of Laws (LLB)

Graduates may also apply for the Bachelor of Laws, which provides the highest standard of legal education and training. You will gain a thorough understanding of the concepts, procedures and reasoning surrounding the Australian legal system and obtain the knowledge and skills required to practise law. You also have the opportunity to study a semester at the Monash campus in Prato, near Florence in Italy, undertake international internships, or obtain practical legal training working with real clients and cases in our two community legal centres. 

Credit for prior learning: We accept a number of graduates and mature-age applicants into the Bachelor of Laws every year. As a graduate entrant, you may be able to obtain credit for up to 36 credit points which means you may complete the Bachelor of Laws in just three years of full-time study (or part-time equivalent).

Entry requirements: Graduates must have:

  • Completed an undergraduate or higher degree at a recognised tertiary institution in the last ten years*
  • Achieved a distinction average or better (70%+) for a Commonwealth Supported Place OR
  • Achieved a credit average or better (60%+) for a full-fee place (this also applies to international graduates)

* Graduates who completed their degree longer than ten years ago should first contact the Law School directly to see if they are eligible for admission to the Bachelor of Laws.

Important note: Graduate entry students enrolling in the LLB in Semester 2, 2008 will not normally be able to complete a full-time enrolment until 2009, due to the nature of the progression (ie, pre-requisites, etc) in the course. The two compulsory foundation units, LAW1101 Introduction to Legal Reasoning and LAW1104 Research and Writing, can both be completed in Semester 2, 2008.

Semester 1, 2009

All Australian and New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents and holders of Australian permanent humanitarian visas (including graduate applicants) applying for the Bachelor of Laws and associated double degrees must apply through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). International students must apply through Monash international student admissions.
