Born from a unique blend of Asian and European lifestyles, Melbourne is consistently ranked among the world’s most livable cities. It is a multicultural city and enjoys a worldwide reputation for excellence in education, the arts, and major events.
Monash Law School is one of the largest and most prestigious law schools in Australia. Students from around the world study law at Monash, exchanging knowledge and ideas and contributing to the cultural wealth of the faculty community.
The Monash JD is taught primarily in the Monash University Law Chambers, located in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD at 472 Bourke Street, Melbourne. It is a graduate law degree specifically designed to teach the legal knowledge and skills required to practise law. The Monash JD recognises the individual needs of non-law graduates who would like to study law and offers the transferable skills and knowledge only a law degree from one of Australia’s leading academic institutions can provide.
Intensive program
The Monash JD is an intensive three year program. After two trimesters, high performing students may choose to apply to accelerate their progress to complete the JD in two and a half years where work and other commitments permit.
Flexibility and convenience
The flexible nature of the Monash JD allows you to work while you study and to tailor your workload to suit professional and personal commitments. Students can select their preferred timeslots for units that offer more than one stream.
Interactive learning environment
Small class sizes and innovative teaching brings together passionate and dedicated individuals with diverse professional experiences in a stimulating and challenging environment.
Convenient CBD location
Classes are primarily located at the city-based Monash Law Chambers located in the heart of Melbourne’s legal precinct.
*Note: LAW7470 Australian legal reasoning and methods and LAW7264 Principles of criminal law and procedure are normally taught at the Clayton Campus.
Highest quality teaching
The Monash JD is taught by leading academics who are experts in the teaching and practice of law. Experienced local practitioners and internationally recognised academic visitors also teach into this program to enrich the educational experience.
The chance to expand your legal horizons
The Monash JD is unique as it enables students to undertake six elective units from Monash Law’s highly respected and diverse masters program. Students gain experience and knowledge by sharing a classroom with legal professionals undertaking postgraduate study. Elective units focus on issues as diverse as human rights, commercial law, intellectual property and international law.
Opportunities - international study opportunities and clinical legal education
The Monash JD will open the doors to opportunities both internationally and domestically. Students have the opportunity to study a semester at the Monash campus in Prato (Italy) or Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia); undertake international internships; undertake our dual JD degree with the Washington College of Law (Washington DC, USA); or obtain practical legal training working with real clients and cases in our two community legal centres.
