The intern will be required to self-fund their travel costs and living expenses. The cost of airfares varies (usually around $AUD2000-2500). It is also a requirement of the program that interns take out travel insurance that provides cover at the highest level, in acknowledgment of the costs of services in the US. Past interns have estimated the cost of spending three months in the US, depending upon location and lifestyle, at approximately $AUD6000-8000, however many have survived on less.
Reprieve Australia does not offer any funding to the selected interns, however the Student Mobility Fund is an automatic grant of up to AUD $2500 from the Faculty of Law for all selected applicants (maximum of 3 per year) who are current law students at Monash University.
Accommodation is primarily the responsibility of the intern. In many cases, interns live together – the offices in which students are interned are usually tight-knit communities and interns in the past have never had any concerns finding accommodation.
