Examples
- Choosing which unit to discontinue
You have successfully completed the two introductory units and have begun to study LAW7265 Principles of Contract and LAW7273 Principles of Criminal Law. Due to unexpected work/family commitments you are finding it difficult to cope with two units concurrently and decide to drop one of the two units. Which unit should you keep and which should you drop?
By continuing with LAW7265 Principles of Contract and dropping LAW7264 Principles of Criminal Law you will have more options in the following trimesters as there are 7 units that will not be open to you without contract but only 1 will be unavailable if you have not passed LAW7264 Principles of Criminal Law.
- Adding a unit to the standard 3.5 progression
You have completed two trimesters of study and while you think you may manage 3 units per trimester you are wary of undertaking 4. You are wondering which unit to add to your planned enrolment in LAW7267 Principles of Property and LAW7269 Principles of Equity.
The units LAW7266 Principles of Torts and LAW7268 Principles of Constitutional Law have LAW7212 Australian Legal System as the only prerequisite so you may chose either unit. However, as LAW7266 Principles of Torts is a prerequisite for both LAW7268 Principles of Civil Procedure and LAW7331 Lawyers' Responsibilities you will have greater flexibility in later trimesters if you take LAW7266 Principles of Torts first.
- Taking 3 units per trimester
If you decide to take 3 units per trimester on a regular basis you should make sure you check the timetable for the full year and plan ahead carefully. Classes are usually taught in pairs as shown on the 3.5 year progression. If you split the pair you should not only be aware the issue of prerequisites but also of timetabling.
It is usually safest to complete a pair before splitting another. That will avoid the situation where, for example, you complete all the late afternoon units and are left with early afternoon units which clash (or visa versa).
- Intermitting for 1 or 2 trimesters
If you began the course in August /September and intermit for one trimester only your return will be straightforward; you will simply attend the classes scheduled for the cohort that immediately follows yours.
If you began the class in January/February and intermit for two trimesters your return will be straightforward; you will simply attend the classes scheduled for the cohort that immediately follows yours.
A student in the Lima intake intermitting for 1 trimester would join Manna students (assuming the student is not carrying any fails).
A student in the Kappa intake intermitting for 2 trimesters would join Lima students (assuming the student is not carrying any fails).
As we have only two intakes per year and units are offered twice in each calendar year an August intake student intermitting for two trimesters or a February intake student intermitting for one trimester may need to pick up units out of the usual sequence, or undertake a reduced load during the first trimester following their return.
- Failure to pass compulsory units
If you fail a unit which is a prerequisite for a later unit this will restrict your ability to progress and you may be required to withdraw from units if you have not passed the prerequisites.
Due to the very short period of time between trimesters it will rarely be possible for us to release results before the start of the following trimester. We aim to have results released before the 2nd class in the new trimester. If you fail a unit we will, if possible, contact you prior to the formal release of results and provide advice about course planning.
For example, if you fail LAW7265 Principles of Contract Law you will not be eligible to undertake LAW7267 Principles of Property or LAW7269 Principles of Equity but would be able to study LAW7266 Principles of Torts and LAW7268 Principles of Constitutional Law.
