Intermission is normally granted for a period of no more than one calendar year or two consecutive semesters. If you wish to extend your intermission, you must re-apply in writing and the faculty will determine whether an extension is possible.

If you are approved for intermission, you will be notified in writing.
Closing dates
Please refer to the university-wide closing dates for Intermission. If your application for intermission is approved, any enrolled units will be automatically discontinued. Depending on when you apply for intermission, certain academic and financial penalties may apply.
International students and intermission
- International on-campus students may only be granted intermission on compassionate grounds. This includes bereavement and extreme personal hardship. Documentation must be provided in order for the intermission to be granted. You must speak to a student advisor at a Health and Wellbeing Hub, who will provide you with information about possible consequences to your student visa.
- You may really need to return home but be unable to take intermission due to ESOS regulations. Depending on the circumstances, the Faculty may be able to allow you to withdraw in good standing from the university and give you a letter of guaranteed re-entry to return at a later date. Please see your Student Services Office about this should you have any concerns. You could also consider transferring to a course offered via off-campus learning or to a course offered by Monash in Malaysia.
Returning to study -
- All students must re-enrol during the October/November re-enrolment period if returning to study in either Semester 1 or 2 of the following year. You will need to access WES to re-enrol.
- On-campus students need to access Allocate+ to select timetabling preferences.
- If you are taking intermission in both Semester 1 and Semester 2 you will need to re-enrol for the following year in the normal re-enrolment period (October/November).
Receiving information whilst on intermission
- You should always check your Monash email account for important information while you are on intermission. If your postal address changes while you are on intermission you must update your address details through my.monash.
