Eligibility

Masters Degrees

(Extract from the Master Degrees Regulations)

6. Credit

6.1 Where a candidate's course of study includes units, the faculty board may grant the candidate credit for up to -

6.1.1 two units satisfactorily completed in the course of study for the degree of Bachelor of Laws; or

6.1.2 two units in the course of study for a masters degree or graduate diploma in the university or in another tertiary institution -
provided that the faculty board is satisfied the units are equivalent to or a satisfactory substitute for units in the candidate's course of study.

6.2 A candidate for the degree of Master of Commercial Law may be granted credit for up to four units satisfactorily completed in the course of study for the degree of Master of Business Law in the faculty of Business and Economics.

6.3 A candidate for the degree of Master of Intellectual Property who satisfactorily completes units offered by the Academy of the Institute of Patent Attorneys and approved for the purpose by the faculty board, may be granted credit for those units.

6.4 A candidate, other than a candidate for the degree of Master of Regulatory Studies, who is an accredited specialist through the Law Institute of Victoria Specialists Accreditation Scheme or the Law Institute of New South Wales Accreditation Scheme, must be granted credit for one unit in the candidate's course of study.

6.5 Credit under this section must not be granted in respect of a unit completed more than eight years prior to admission to candidature.

Master of Laws (Juris Doctor)

18. Credit

18.1 The faculty board may grant a candidate credit for up to -

18.1.1 eight compulsory units ; or

18.1.2 seven compulsory units and one elective unit -

provided the faculty board is satisfied the units are equivalent to or a satisfactory substitute for compulsory or elective units, as the case requires, in the candidate's course of study

18.2 Credit under this section must not be granted in respect of a unit completed more than eight years prior to admission to candidature.

Graduate Diplomas

(Extract from the Graduate and Postgraduate Diploma Regulations)

6. Credit

6.1 The faculty board may grant credit to a graduate diploma candidate for -

6.1.1 one or more degree units satisfactorily completed in the faculty, to a maximum of 50% of the work in the candidate's course of study ; and

6.1.2 up to two units satisfactorily completed in another faculty of the university or in another educational institution, where the faculty board is satisfied that the units are equivalent to or a satisfactory substitute for work in the candidate's course of study.

6.2 Where a graduate diploma candidate has had a minimum of two years work experience which the faculty board is satisfied is a satisfactory substitute for work in the candidate's course of study, the faculty board may grant credit to the candidate, to a maximum of 50% of the work in the course of study.

6.3 Credit under this section must not be granted in respect of a unit completed, or work undertaken, more than eight years prior to admission to candidature.

6.4 A candidate granted credit under this subsection must complete the relevant course of study in the time specified by the faculty board.

Graduate Certificates

5. Credit - Graduate Certificate in Law

5.1 Subject to this section, where the faculty board is satisfied that a candidate for the Graduate Certificate in Law has qualifications or experience equivalent to or a satisfactory substitute for work in the candidate's course of study, the faculty board may grant the candidate credit in respect of that work.

5.2 Credit under subsection 5.1 must not be granted in respect to more than 50 % of the work in a course of study.

5.3 A candidate granted credit under this section must complete the course of study within the time specified by the faculty board.

Application process

Applications must be made using the Credit Application Form  and submitted to the Student and Academic Services office.
