Additional enrolment and course information

Allocate+

Allocate+ is a timetabling online allocation system.  Allocate+ is not a first come/first served system. Your preferences are collected, ranked, randomised and sorted. After completion of the sort, you will be provided with a timetable. To be able to access Allocate+, you will need an authcate account.

Allocate+ opens for preference entry mode between 7 June - 14 July and re-opens for allocate-adjustment on Tuesday 19 July. You may find that you need to change the stream or tutorial assigned for your Law units. You may do this either online via Allocate+ or, if this is not successful, by submitting a Change of Stream Request form - more information. The form can also be collected from the Student Services counter, and it must be submitted to the box provided in the faculty, or posted to:

 Commencement of classes

Semester 1 commences on Monday 25 July, 2011. Most lectures and some tutorials start in the first week. For others, tutorials and practical classes commence in the second week.

Location of the faculty and lecture theatres

It would be an advantage to orientate yourself using the Lecture Theatre Locations map before the semester begins as you could waste valuable lecture time looking for lecture theatres and tutorial rooms. Lectures start on time, and lecturers do not wait for late-comers!

Legibook

The Legibook Co-operative operates a non-profit bookshop selling legal texts and materials. Legal texts are sold at a discount to its members, the discount currently being 21% off the publisher's recommended retail price (for cash, cheque, credit card and EFTPOS purchases). Legibook offers a further discount of 8% off books and legislation listed on current reading guides.

Legibook membership is available to all students for a ‘one off’ membership fee of $10 (note Legibook only accepts cash or cheques for membership payment). An application for membership will be provided to you on enrolment or obtain and submit your application at the Legibook office at any time.

Whilst it is recommended that you join Legibook before classes start, you do not normally need to purchase texts and class notes before classes commence. Lecturers will advise you to the texts and/or class notes and legislation you may need to purchase in class.

Monash Law Students Society (LSS)

The Monash Law Students’ Society (LSS) exists as a voice for law students and provides them with a vast range of facilities and services. It operates not only to promote social activities, but also to further the academic and professional interests of law students. It is considered the biggest and best law students’ society in Australia.

The Law Library

Located in the centre of the Law Building, the Law Library is one of the best law libraries in Australia.

Learning Skills

The Library provides services and resources to those who want to improve their academic learning skills, including the quality of their academic English and approaches to study, at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Assistance is offered in such areas as oral communication and presentation, reading, study and exam preparation, effective listening and note-taking in lectures and seminars, analysis, problem-solving and critical thinking, and academic essay, report and thesis writing.

There is also online assistance through the Learning support websites.

Disability Liaison Unit

If you have a disability or medical condition that may impact on your studies, you should investigate the range of services provided by the DLU.

Managing Law School Stress

Any University degree brings with it many demands which will challenge and at times be stressful. Additionally, personal life events or circumstances can sometimes be stressful.  If you begin to feel overwhelmed or things impact on your study, the Law Counsellor can provide some support.Appointments with the counsellor can be made through the Law Student and Academic Services office in person or by calling 9905 3356.

Please note that counselling is also available through University Community Services.

The Faculty of Law website will be updated regularly with any timetable changes or changes in units or faculty regulations or policy.

The faculty website also has links to other important websites, faculty application forms and faculty staff so you should consult the faculty website on a regular basis. 

Computer Facilities

There are two student computer laboratories located within the Law Library on the 1^st floor. Computer Laboratory Supervisors are available to assist students with computer enquiries during times shown on the Supervisors’ door and at other times students can contact the ITS Help Desk on 9906 6777. The 4^th floor teaching laboratory is also open to students when not in use for training courses. The Faculty also operates a computer laboratory at Monash University Law Chambers.

A laser printer is also available for students in each laboratory; this service is provided at a nominal cost and is activated by the copytext card system. Cards may be purchased from the Computer Laboratory Supervisor or via a card dispenser located within the laboratory.

Financial assistance

If you are in need of financial advice, you should consult the Monash Student Association or Student Welfare Service (first floor, Campus Centre, Building 10) who can help with any queries as to eligibility for Youth Allowances or other forms of student finance. You can also refer to the Student Financial Aid web site which will provide you with a range of useful information.
