International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, Basic Code of Labour Practice

In December 1997 the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) adopted a "Basic Code of Conduct covering Labour Practices". The code seeks to establish a set of minimum standards that should be included in all codes of conduct addressing labour practices. Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining are included. The code provides that implementation must extend to the company’s contractors, subcontractors, principal suppliers and licensees. The company must establish a procedure to resolve questions about the code’s meaning and its implications.
