The following opportunities are not directly funded by the Castan Centre, and in most cases the organisations in question do not provide funding for internships.  Nevertheless, current Monash law students who secure these opportunities may be able to receive funding from the Student Travel Fund.

  • O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law: Institute Fellows

    The O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law is seeking exceptionally qualified candidates to serve as O’Neill Institute Fellows. Candidates should have their J.D. degree, and exceptional academic credentials, including publication, strong research interests, and knowledge or experience in aspects of national or global health law and ethics, such as public health, empirical studies, regulation, financing, and/or human rights. Candidates with a health degree or significant health policy experience may be preferred. Application should be made by letter or email, with accompanying CV, writing sample, professional references, official law school transcript, and other graduate school transcript (if applicable).

  • International Service for Human Rights:  Director

    The International Service for Human Rights is now seeking a new Director to lead its secretariat. This position is based in Geneva.

    The Director leads and manages the organisation on behalf of the Board. The position requires a very high level of knowledge of and experience in the international human rights system, a proven commitment to human rights, the ability to lead and nurture a team of talented, committed human rights professionals, and strategic and visionary thinking to identify and respond to emerging needs in the field of international human rights promotion and protection.

    Interview dates: 18 and 19 January 2010.

  • World Health Organization (Geneva)
    The Health and Human Rights team invites post-graduate students, preferably in human rights law and/or public health, for a three to six month unpaid internship position at the WHO headquarters in Geneva starting October 2009.  No financial assistance is available from WHO, costs of travel, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern.  Interns are also responsible for obtaining the necessary visas and arranging their travel.  They are required to have valid medical insurance coverage and proof of such for the duration of their stay. 

    Interns participate in a broad spectrum of activities, depending very much on their interests and skills, which include supporting the team's interaction with the UN human rights treaty monitoring bodies, in particular the CESCR, NGOs and academic insitutions working on the right to health and related issues; supporting the dail work of the team ie attending and reporting back from meetins, assisting in preparation for training, meetings, publication and reports; and working closely with the team's professional staff to provide research assistance on health and human rights topics as needed.

  • United Nations University, Office at the UN, New York - Junior Professional Fellows Internships
    The United Nations University Office at the United Nations, New York (UNU-ONY) recruits Junior Professional Fellows (JPFs) for two sessions each year running from August to January, and February to July.

    As a UN agency, the aim of the UNU is to function as a think tank of and for the UN, and to bridge the gap between policy makers and academia. The UNU Office in New York's areas of responsibility include Events, Marketing, and Partnership-Fundraising. Recently, two new focus areas have been added during the Junior Professional Fellows session that ran from August 2008 to January 2009: Policy Research and Latin America. This provides the Junior Professional Fellows with a unique opportunity to further expand the work that has recently been initiated, and to concretize the activities in these two important areas.

    The Junior Professional Fellows will also be responsible for general office work and administrative support, building UNU-ONY's database of experts, as well as assisting in the recruitment process of Junior Professional Fellows for the following session.
