During her studies at Monash, Shahaan focused on Asian history, Politics and international human rights.
Upon completion of her Bachelor of Arts in 2003, Shahaan was awarded membership of the Golden Key International Honour Society for her outstanding scholastic achievement and her essay entitled “Indo-Israeli relations since 1947” was included in Explorations, a publication of the Australian Centre for the Study of Jewish Civilisation.
Shahaan was the sole Australian student delegate selected for the 3rd Annual Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Conference in 2005 held by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs and the Federation of Industry and Chambers of Commerce of India. During the three-week internship, Shahaan gave a number of interviews with the Indian media regarding her views on India and its development, and liaised with the Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs.
In 2004, Shahaan undertook an internship with the Land Registry of Victoria to provide the Deputy Registrar with a report, accompanied with templates, for proposals to expand the role of electronic conveyancing throughout Victoria. She was also previously an active member of the United Nations Youth Association of Victoria.
In early 2005 Shahaan completed one semester of study at the Monash University campus in Prato, Italy, before undertaking travel around Europe. Shahaan has also traveled extensively through India.
Of late, Shahaan has been volunteering in the Human Rights Legal Department in the Asylum Seeker’s Resource Centre, Melbourne. In this role she performs legal research and legal casework duties in the area of refugee law.
Shahaan has a particular interest in human rights; and Indian history, politics and development.
