Linda Gyorki, Human Rights First, New York (December 2005 '" February 2006)

Linda Gyorki

Linda spent twelve weeks conducting research in international human rights and humanitarian law, under the supervision of Gabor Rona, International Legal Director of Human Rights First.

Currently enrolled in her Arts/Law degree at Monash University, Linda is completing her Honours year in Arts in 2006, writing her thesis on France’s refugee policy.

Linda has been passionately involved in humanitarian work throughout her studies at university. After finishing the first year of her degree, Linda went to Bangalore, India for two months and worked as an English, mathematics and drama teacher at Christel House, a school for children who are severely afflicted by poverty. Christel House aims to break the cycle of poverty by providing children with a sound education, clothing, food and medical assistance. Linda also taught English skills to Afghan refugees in Melbourne for two years.

Since early 2004, Linda has been volunteering weekly in the criminal division of the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service. At VALS, Linda conducts research into matters in both the indictable and summary jurisdictions.

In June/July 2005, Linda undertook an internship at the Cape York Institute for Policy and Leadership in Cairns, directed by Noel Pearson. During that time, Linda worked in a team developing a framework to analyse the future economic viability of small, remote Aboriginal communities.
