Castan Centre Human Rights Moot Competition

2011 Human Rights Moot Competition

***Congratulations to team 3 from Melbourne University which is this year's Human Rights Moot Champion***

*Moot problem now availble* (see below for the draw)

The Castan Centre is proud to be hosting the 5th annual Castan Centre Human Rights Moot Competition in August 2011.

The competition will address issues associated with the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (Vic) (the ‘Charter') and other Victorian human rights legislation, and will give students the opportunity to hone their skills in this important new area of law.  The event is proudly sponsored by Clayton Utz.

The Castan Centre considers it vital - as part of its mandate to promote human rights - to initiate a skills based competition focussing exclusively on human rights. The Charter and other human rights legislation have become an integral part of all Victorian lawyers' practices, and it is essential that students are given opportunities to develop their skills in this area.

The centre is grateful for the strong support from each of Victoria's five law schools in the organisation and implementation of this competition.

Where will the Moots Take Place?

The preliminary rounds and the semi finals will be held at the offices of Clayton Utz, located at 333 Collins Street, Melbourne. The Grand Final will take place in the Red Court of the Court of Appeal, 459 Lonsdale St, Melbourne. Guests are invited to watch all rounds of the moot competition and join us for the awards ceremony which will take place following the Grand Final at the Essoign Club.

Who Can Compete?

Entry is open to two teams from each Victorian university.  Teams from other Australian Universities can compete as space allows.  Other Australian Universities should contact the Castan Centre to register their interest in competing.  Each law school is responsible for choosing and organising its teams, and students should apply to the designated representative within their faculty (see How to Apply, below).  Each team should have three competitors – Senior Counsel, Junior Counsel and instructing solicitor.

Competitors must be in the equivalent of at least third year of a combined law degree or any year of a JD degree, but must not have completed their degree.  It is preferable that competitors have completed some studies in human rights law.

Who will Judge the Moots?

The preliminary rounds will be judged by Clayton Utz solicitors and the semi final moots by pre-eminent members of Victoria’s legal fraternity. The judges for the Grand Final will be Her Honour, Justice Neave AO of the Court of Appeal, Judge Felicity Hampel SC of the County Court and Professor Spencer Zifcak, Allan Myers Chair of Law at Australian Catholic University.
