Journalist and author Tony Maniaty covered the conflict in East Timor in 1975, was European Correspondent for SBS's Dateline, Executive Producer of ABC's The 7.30 Report, and Senior Advisor, Policy and Program Development, for ABC News and Current Affairs.  His published works include two novels, The Children Must Dance (1984) and Smyrna (1989), short-listed for the Miles Franklin Award.  He holds a Master of Arts (Media) degree for his research into TV coverage of warfare from Vietnam to Iraq, and lectures in risk reporting, foreign policy and global media at the University of Technology Sydney and the Danish School of Journalism in Arhus.  His latest book is Shooting Balibo: Blood and Memory in East Timor (Penguin, 2009), and he was a consultant on the recent movie Balibo starring Anthony LaPaglia.  His website is www.tonymaniaty.com.
