Castan Centre for Human Rights Law

The Charter of Human Rights and the European Experience

Public Lecture

Speakers

Mr Rabinder Singh QC, London Bar
"The Impact of the Human Rights Act in the UK"

and

Dr Angela Ward, London Bar
"The Impact of EU membership on fundamental rights protection in the UK"

As the date for full operation of the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (Vic) draws closer, this event will help people to understand its potential impacts. Mr Singh will outline the effect that the UK Human Rights Act – on which the Charter is based - has had on British society and law.  Dr Ward will consider the ramifications of the European human rights system on Britain.  The European system– like the Charter – is based on the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Rabinder Singh QC is a practising barrister and a Visiting Professor of Law at the London School of Economics.  He is the author of The Future of Human Rights in the UK and has appeared in many of the leading cases on the UK's Human Rights Act.

Angela Ward practises at the London Bar, specialising in European Union law and human rights law. She is a fellow of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law, and the author of over 25 books and articles on EU law and human rights law.
